Although I am an Honours Fine Arts graduate, it was not until well after I graduated that I began my love affair with oil painting. Specifically thick textural oil painting, good enough to eat oil painting. In fact, some of the paintings are embellished by placing the oil paint in an icing bag fitted with cake decorating nozzles. As my work matured I began to realize that my greatest joy came from producing work that was ‘happy’ looking, cheerful, playful, many that were evocative of my personal memories from childhood. This series is based on memories of my birthday parties at my grandmother’s farm – presents, cake, cotton candy, mounds of confetti and wrapping paper, a special dress.
